Introducing… Christian Mistress

bio from Relapse Records:

“a deliciously retro sound, with two guitars dancing in lockstep over a leather-jacketed chug and swagger reminiscent of early-’80s Black Sabbath.” – Time Out NY

Olympia, Washington’s traditional heavy metal band, CHRISTIAN MISTRESS (Christine Davis: vocals, Oscar Sparbel: guitar, Ryan McClain: guitar, Johnny Wulf: bass, Reuben Storey: drums) formed in 2007, while the band’s 2010 LP, ‘Agony & Opium’, received international critical acclaim for its unflinchingly authentic take on American heavy metal.

In 2009 CHRISTIAN MISTRESS released a 4 song demo cassette, which quickly went on to sell more than 300 copies worldwide. The demo attracted the attention and praise of several underground luminaries and lovers of classic metal including infamous illustrator Dennis Dread, Ajna Offensive curator Tyler Davis and outspoken Darkthrone mastermind Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell who has repeatedly name dropped the band in recent interviews. A two track 7 inch EP was subsequently released further garnering the band underground accolades across the world.

Far from being yet another throwback or mere tribute band CHRISTIAN MISTRESS’s music is rooted firmly in the present with a respectable and dignified grasp of retrospect. On “Agony & Opium” the band unleash 6 ripping tracks of precision-crafted American Heavy Metal that will set the bar for the modern classic sound that doesn’t simply ride the lightning of past scene glories and aesthetics, but brings new fresh ideas to the genre musically and lyrically. The shredding dual guitar lead trade-offs, performed with the utmost class, never lose sight of memorable songcraft first and foremost. Anchored by a tight, driving rhythm section and the raw and throaty instantly memorable vocal delivery of Christine Davis, the CHRISTIAN MISTRESS sound is immediately familiar and yet sounds like no other heavy metal band currently working.

In 2011, CHRISTIAN MISTRESS signed to Relapse Records and recorded their sophomore album, ‘Possession’, which will see a February 2012 release.

First thanks goes out to The Soda Shop’s own Henry for the review of their upcoming release. The review was convincing enough that I not only preordered the upcoming release on vinyl, I found their back catalog and swiftly scooped it up. This is some fine female fronted doom. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard before with the exception of Alunah. I’m simply floored by them and their sound. Just listen to the song “Black To Gold” and you’ll see. Possession is due out at the end of the month on Relapse Records.
