The home for stoner rock news and reviews.

Bandcamp Recommendations 4/5/2012

Grip of Delusion Radio has been the home for The Soda Shop Podcast since this past October. April 1st was the first birthday of the station and to celebrate, a free comp album was released. The album is massive. 100+ bands submitted tracks to be included. Well over 11 hours.

“The name Iron Mtn. comes from the hardest to reach, yet most beautiful summit in the San Gabriel Mountains, and the term can also be used as a metaphor for living in Southern California-a balance of beauty and brutality.

Fellwoods seem to play a unique brand of psychedelic blues with a lot of Sabbath inspired doom, plenty of great sounding riffs and some 70′s progressive hard rock ala Hard Stuff, Fuzzy Duck or Atomic Rooster. Vocally, Adam Burke does have a similar voice to Dylan Francis (The Suede Brothers). The album doesn’t rely heavily on effects and sound bits although there is a little bit of it.

Review HERE and HERE

Iron Mtn. pull from various influences yet remain unique in their sound and approach. Featuring extreme volume and ample improvisation, Iron Mtn. sound unlike any one band, yet have been compared to bands such as Can, Black Sabbath, Zoroaster, and Circle.”This is some fine shit here. Imagine if you had the finest seed and were able to grow the finest most potent strain of weed known to man. That is what Iron Mtn is. It’s instrumental stoner/doom rock. Oh is it good. Physical copies exist however, only 100, er, I mean 99 remain.

“A blast of heavy, heavy goodness. Rooted in stoner/blues rock but cranked up to 11 creating a raunchy, groovy, wall of sound. HUGONAUT will punch your eardrums in….but in a good way.Hugonaut is a hard rock groove titan playing out of Halifax, Nova Scotia for the past two years. Blowing the doors off venues around the Halifax area from the North End to the downtown clubs, 2012 will see the release their debut album Hello Destroyed, where a chorus of rock vocals, heavy metal guitars and prog sojourns combine to overpower listeners with an unstoppable wall of sound.”

Now this is odd. The band is Lavagoat and this is their self titled. The odd thing, this album has been out for nearly 2 years. I found it while looking for stuff for a future article. I couldn’t wait and hold out, I had to share now. Another odd thing, there were no Facebook “likes” on the album when I found them.

Lavagoat are a Heavy Metal band from Saskatoon, SK. The 4 piece hammer elements of doom, death, NWOBHM, 70’s rock and thrash together with themes of sword & sorcery, horror & sci-fi, mixed to forge a psychedelic onslaught of skull crushing force.

From the spinning bowels of a 1960 research facility, former members of As$troland, Perils of Obedience, Jeer at Rome, and Johatsu came together to found Chimpgrinder. Faceripping bluesdeathsludge

Mind blowing sludgey doom.

Somali Yacht Club is a stoner rock trio from Lviv, Ukraine. The band mixes elements of stoner rock, psychedelic rock, shoegazing and post-metal in their music. In August 2011 released their first four-song EP “Sandsongs”.

The name RainDoggs is a play on Tom Waits’ description of a pack of dogs who lost their sent in the rain. Add a little Snoop Dogg for style and you have The RainDoggs, a pack of lost dogs looking for a pack leader. The RainDoggs are a collaboration of musicians from Austin TX. Their sound is a mixe of R&B/Soul & Blues with a David Lynch movie.

Since mid 2010, Hydromedusa have been playing heavy riffs that make you wanna get down!  Hydromedusa hail from darker corners of Adelaide, South Australia. They play fuzzed out desert rock with a heavy sludgy overtone.

The antithesis of prolific, the nebulous concept of Hydronaut has remained a righteous yet virtually non-exisitent force since 03? 04 maybe? It’s been quite awhile. Roughly 14-15 songs total have been written in this rediculously long time span. However, some of those songs are awesome.

Cabrocordero is the band, doomy droned out sludge metal is the game. Melvins’ fans, Get this!

Kentucky fried sludge punk, around since 2005. Wow, this is pretty fast paced and aggressive. Only listen to if your bones are in good shape, this one really gets you going.
