Toby Cook of The Quietus recently conducted an interview with Matt Pike of the San Francisco Bay Area hard rock band HIGH ON FIRE. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
The Quietus: The title of the [new HIGH ON FIRE] record, “De Vermis Mysteriis”, obviously has links to the grimoires of Robert Bloch and H.P. Lovecraft, but the concept is based around the idea that Jesus had a twin who died at birth, and then became a time traveller, right? Can you clear up what the fuck’s going on there?
Pike: Yeah, well, he died at birth so that Jesus could live and then forwards himself through time and sees the destruction that Christianity causes and tries to travel back in time to warn his brother — who’s innocent of all this. But there’s lots of little factors in between that are Lovecraft-ian, (more…)

Steel And Fire recently conducted an interview with guitarist/vocalist Janne “J.B.” Christoffersson of Swedish heavy rockers GRAND MAGUS. You can now watch the chat below.
Due to family obligations and work commitments, drummer Sebastian “Seb” Sippola has left GRAND MAGUS. The new man behind the kit is Ludwig “Ludde” Witt (SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, FIREBIRD, SHINING).
Commented Sebastian: “It took a load off my mind that Ludwig was chosen because he is a friend of mine. By the way, honestly and objective: In my opinion Ludwig is the best replacement for me because he already knows J.B. and Fox [Skinner, bass] and he exactly knows which demands the drumming at GRAND MAGUS will make on him. They will be a great team and I’m really looking forward to see them live — though I have no idea, how my reaction will be in this situation.” (more…)

Iann Robinson of CraveOnline.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist Woody Weatherman of Raleigh, North Carolina legends CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
CraveOnline.com: So you’re back together, out doing the “Animosity” three-piece tour and everybody loves it. Was it always your intention to record an album of new material or did it start out as just for fun?
Woody: There was always the intention of having new songs, which we did almost right off the bat. We had written two or three new songs to help supplement the “Animosity” album stuff when we played it live. I think maybe at first we just wanted to test the waters and see how much fun we were having, but it didn’t take too long to realize that we wanted to write an album as a three-piece and tour off of it. Much ado about Ghost and their shtick, and that’s fine – we need a good one every now and then. The lengths in which the band goes to keep their true identities a secret is commendable, as is their proto-Mercyful Fate/classic metal concoction. On their Opus Eponymous debut, the Swedes come across less as a revelation and more as a defender of the 80’s metal faith, but when coupled with their mysterious image and penchant for theatrics, it’s a perfect storm in this climate.
The new year poses to be a pivotal year for Ghost, with an impending North American headlining run scheduled for January, to be followed up by their release of their sophomore album by summer/fall. After an aborted fall 2011 support with Enslaved in the rear-view, we snagged main Ghost man The Nameless Ghoul, but not after he had to secure “a dark basement” (his words) to chat. Read on…

We’ll see if that actually happens.”

Candlelight Records last month announced the signing of CORROSION OF CONFORMITY to a worldwide deal. Since early this year, the band — featuring the esteemed “Animosity” lineup of vocalist/bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woody Weatherman, and drummer/vocalist Reed Mullin — has been working with long-time producer John Custer. Now nearly complete, their still-untitled eighth studio album is planned for release early in the New Year. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include “River Of Stone”, “Psychic Vampire”, “Leeches”, “Rat City”, “The Moneychangers” and “What We Become”.
When asked if fans can expect any big changes to the band’s sound, Dean told AOL‘s Noisecreep, “What’s new is what was old. It’s the three piece lineup from ‘Animosity’. While we’re not focusing on recreating that sound deliberately, there are some fast tempos and aggressive riffs but it’s a reflection of where we’re at today.” (more…)

Metal Underground has posted an interesting article/interview with Bruno Fevery of Kyuss Lives! In it the guitarist Discusses the Return of Kyuss, Replacing Josh Homme and New Material. Here are a few exerts.
Kyuss’s sound contained so many features that unsurprisingly caught the ears of so many musicians of the early ‘90s, but one of the greatest attributes remains guitarist Josh Homme’s eclectic style. From his coarse tones to his eccentric use of pedals, Homme’s playing is unmistakable. These guitar tones relay a granular texture that seemed chipped off of one of Joshua Tree’s magnificent rock formations, which may explain the desert rock modifier often bestowed upon the band. Homme’s trademark sound remains true in the band he joined after leaving Kyuss, Queens (more…)
