Top 20 of 2011 – Bill’s Picks

Well it’s that time of year again. Time to name my favorite albums of 2011. 2011 brought us a lot of good stuff by a lot of great bands. 2011 also brought on a lot of surprises from bands that were really unknown until their material was released or well afterwards. Bandcamp played a huge role in music discovery for me. It turned out hundreds of great albums not only released in 2011 but in years past as well. This list, my favorites as well as honorable mentions, is no way a complete list of what was released this year. There is just to much out there that I don’t either have time to get to, never heard of or won’t discover until well after this year is completely over. I know there’s going to be a few surprises. Let it be known that I listened to a LOT of new albums this year and picking my top 20 out of the hundreds was very hard to do.

20. The Sade – Damned Love – (review) I really didn’t know what to expect when this one came across my desk but I needed to check it out. And check it out I did. I was pretty damn impressed that I listened to the album at least 10 times in a row. In my review I stated “The majority of the album is all alchchol fueled hard rock. Throughout my listening of the album I couldn’t help but think that this is what Social Distortion may sound like if they were more rooted in 70′s hard rock as opposed to their punk roots.” Granted it’s been a few months since I’ve listened to it, it still has a strong spot in my top 20.

Review- Blood Ceremony – Living with the Ancients

I’m in love…I have fallen for the sweet sounds of Blood Ceremony. It took a couple dates (spins) before I looked her in the eyes and proclaimed my infatuation. The music created by the Canadian four piece is breathtaking…but I understand love is in the eye of the beholder.

Against my better judgment (don’t want to jinx it) I will now gush about my new love.
The album begins with “The Great God Pan”, a guitar driven doom/stoner monster. Alia O’Brien’s vocals are sultry and perfect. I feel my heart racing. “Coven Tree” is next with its slow paced doom. This is our first taste of O’Brien’s ability on the flute and it is impressive. It’s as if she uses the flute as a voice, with the growls and softness dancing in fields of flowers and fire. Love is tricky. (more…)

Toronto-based occult rockers BLOOD CEREMONY will release their sophomore album Living with the Ancients on March 1, 2011 via Rise Above Records / Metal Blade. Living with the Ancients expands on the sound cultivated by the quartet with its critically-celebrated self-titled debut which was released in 2008 and dubbed “skull-crushing by SPIN.

More Bands Confirmed for Roadburn 2011

A bunch of new bands have been announced for the upcoming Roadburn 2011 show.

Roadburn is very pleased to report that Louisiana math-sludge merchants Soilent Green have been confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2011. Their Roadburn performance will be part of the band’s 2011 European tour, their first appearance on the continent in over 10 years! Having honed their technical prowess in recent years while overcoming an enormous amount of adversity, Soilent Green will add a psychopathically frenzied dose of death-metalized stoner grooves, and we are extremely happy to welcome them to the Roadburn stage on Thursday, April 14th at the 013 venue, Tilburg – Holland.

Roadburn is very happy to report that Alcest has been confirmed for the Thursday Roadburn date, Thursday, April 14, 2011.

Musician and former Peste Noire guitarist Stéphane “Neige” Paut’s solo project Alcest gracefully walks a pastoral, innocent, melancholy and devastatingly beautiful line between shoegaze and atmospheric black metal in a way that nobody has previously managed to pull off.

Alcest’s latest album, “Écailles de Lune,” showcases DIY aesthetics and a production leaning to underground metal. The insistent riffing, arching atmospherics, celestial melodies and suffocating roars sound like the second coming of Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine or Swervedriver.

Those who are willing to enter Niege’s dark, yet romantic and poetic realm with an open mind are in for a beguiling trip filled with a dense, dreamy, hypnotic mixture of shoegaze and black metal that taps into the best of both worlds.

Roadburn Festival is excited to report that Blood Ceremony and Ghost have been confirmed for the Thursday Roadburn date, Thursday, April 14th, 2011. Both Blood Ceremony  and Ghost’s Roadburn appearance will be part of their upcoming 2011 European tour.

Devoted to celebrating all aspects of cinematic Eurotrash, Sixties saturnalia and occult miscellanea,Blood Ceremony‘s band name was inspired by the 1972 Spanish horror flick “Ceremonia Sangrienta.” This adaptation of the Elizabeth Bathory legend is heavy on atmosphere and dread, with stunning visuals and a bleak ending. Blood Ceremony’s doomy vibes conjure up the very same imagery, embodying heavy riffs, paranoia-inducing trills and 70s fills.

Musically, the Toronto-based band is a cross between Black Sabbath and early Jethro Tull, with generous helpings of English folk as well as any noteworthy band that has incorporated the flute as a major instrument, such as Culpepper’s Orchard or Los Dug Dugs.

Delivering litanies of sexually pulsating and satanic rock glorifying and glamorizing the perverted and profane, Sweden’s Ghost is a devil worshiping ministry currently making black, oppressive waves in the underground.

Standing motionless and anonymous beneath the painted faces, hoods and robes required by their sect, the six nameless ghouls of Ghost cast their melodic spell of evil on listeners, intent on achieving the downfall of humanity.

Ghost’s debut full-length, Opus Eponymous, a combination heavy rock with a twisted pop sensibility as well, is scheduled for release on October 18 on Rise Above Records.

Roadburn is very pleased to report that In Solitude has been confirmed for the Thursday Roadburn date, Thursday, April 14th, 2011.

Formed in 2002 in the city of Uppsala, In Solitude are regarded as one of the hottest heavy metal bands to emerge from Sweden during the past decade.

Listening to In Solitude’s catchy, old school heavy metal, these young Swedes will undoubtedly prompt comparisons not only to Mercyful Fate given the high-pitched singing, complex songwriting and diabolical lyrics, but also to the first two Maiden albums on account of the strong guitar melodies. In Solitude is true to the core!

We at Roadburn’s HQ end up having a whiplash-worth headbanging session every time we crank In Solitude’s stunning debut album. Don’t forget your foam neckbraces!
