Top 20 of 2011 – Bill’s Picks

Well it’s that time of year again. Time to name my favorite albums of 2011. 2011 brought us a lot of good stuff by a lot of great bands. 2011 also brought on a lot of surprises from bands that were really unknown until their material was released or well afterwards. Bandcamp played a huge role in music discovery for me. It turned out hundreds of great albums not only released in 2011 but in years past as well. This list, my favorites as well as honorable mentions, is no way a complete list of what was released this year. There is just to much out there that I don’t either have time to get to, never heard of or won’t discover until well after this year is completely over. I know there’s going to be a few surprises. Let it be known that I listened to a LOT of new albums this year and picking my top 20 out of the hundreds was very hard to do.

20. The Sade – Damned Love – (review) I really didn’t know what to expect when this one came across my desk but I needed to check it out. And check it out I did. I was pretty damn impressed that I listened to the album at least 10 times in a row. In my review I stated “The majority of the album is all alchchol fueled hard rock. Throughout my listening of the album I couldn’t help but think that this is what Social Distortion may sound like if they were more rooted in 70′s hard rock as opposed to their punk roots.” Granted it’s been a few months since I’ve listened to it, it still has a strong spot in my top 20.

Review – Dinosaur Eyelids – Down A River

Dinosaur Eyelids claim to be an alternative rock band but there’s nothing alternative about them if you go by the 90’s definition. Don’t think Cracker, Smashing Pumpkins or Soul Asylum. Dinosaur Eyelids are much better than those, a lot heavier and certainly kick a lot of ass in the heavy department. If the band’s definition of alternative is different than the rest then they’re right. Dinosaur Eyelids are a pretty heavy stoner rock band from New Jersey. There’s plenty of down tuned guitars and some fuzz for good measure.

I’ll admit I didn’t listen to all of their debut LP Winter Solstice but the little I did hear I liked. When the band told me they were sending me their latest release, Down A River, I couldn’t help but get a little excited. Now it’s here and I’ve had a chance to give it a good listen. It’s a sweet gem of an album. It’s not completely super heavy, it mixes up to tone, the sound and the tempo. Each track is different than the last. They do have their lighter moments (more…)

New Band To Burn One To – Dinosaur Eyelids

As also seen on Heavy Planet

These next guys here remind me of The Smashing Pumpkins. Let me be clear, it’s the funny name and not the music. The band, Dinosaur Eyelids and they’re the next New Band To Burn One To. Their sound is unique because they’re mostly hard rock and even stoner but they do have hints of alternative. It’s not a bad sound or combo, in fact, I think it sets them apart. They currently have one album available called Winter Solstice. They’re currently hard at work on a nw album which, according to a Myspace status update recently, is almost finished. I look forward to it because these guys from New Jersey have something good going and have a full promising music career ahead of them.
