Top 20 of 2011 – Bill’s Picks

Well it’s that time of year again. Time to name my favorite albums of 2011. 2011 brought us a lot of good stuff by a lot of great bands. 2011 also brought on a lot of surprises from bands that were really unknown until their material was released or well afterwards. Bandcamp played a huge role in music discovery for me. It turned out hundreds of great albums not only released in 2011 but in years past as well. This list, my favorites as well as honorable mentions, is no way a complete list of what was released this year. There is just to much out there that I don’t either have time to get to, never heard of or won’t discover until well after this year is completely over. I know there’s going to be a few surprises. Let it be known that I listened to a LOT of new albums this year and picking my top 20 out of the hundreds was very hard to do.

20. The Sade – Damned Love – (review) I really didn’t know what to expect when this one came across my desk but I needed to check it out. And check it out I did. I was pretty damn impressed that I listened to the album at least 10 times in a row. In my review I stated “The majority of the album is all alchchol fueled hard rock. Throughout my listening of the album I couldn’t help but think that this is what Social Distortion may sound like if they were more rooted in 70′s hard rock as opposed to their punk roots.” Granted it’s been a few months since I’ve listened to it, it still has a strong spot in my top 20.

Review – Elvis Deluxe – Favourite State of Mind

A not so long time ago in a galaxy that is the same as this, I stumbled across an album called Lazy by a band called Elvis Deluxe. I couldn’t quite place my finger on it at the time but there was something that grabbed me. After a few reasons, the reason was quite obvious. These guys just kick a little, no, a lot of ass. A few months later I felt like a kid that was told he was going to the toy store with is dad. Elvis Deluxe were working on new material. Fast forward to today and we have here that latest creation, Favourite State of Mind.

Favourite State of Mind is a whole other beast from Lazy though not to far departed. It seems that Elvis Deluxe has evolved a bit since then. I’d go as far as to compare them to Dozer. Favourite State of Mind has a very Dozer-ish feel to its sound. The album has a good range to it from the very Dozer like sound, to some of the faster almost punk like tunes. “Let Yourself Free” even combines a bit of both. There are even a few moments where some of the (more…)

Bandcamp Recommendations 09/02/2010

Another Thursday, another Bandcamp recommendation. All recommendations are either free or name your price. Don’t forget to support the bands if you like what you hear by either throwing a few dollars eir way or buying physical items such as cds, LPs or shirts. Go see them live too if you can make it.

The first album is a pretty damn good one. The band, Elvis Deluxe, the location, Poland. These polish stoners are offering their 2007 debut, Lazy, for free while they work on their followup album. The music is part psychedelic, part glam, part garage and ALL stoner. They have a similar sound to Dozer. This is one album you don’t want to pass up.

Next up is a very cool stoner metal band from New York. The album is stoner metal with some punk elements. Oh, I forgot to mention, Creek Devil is a one an band. Lance Horenbein is the mastermind behind the band. The album featured is called Burnout, one of six albums available, all for free of course.

This next group is Vevlo Eel and they are from Charlottestown, NC. This is the band’s 2004 release. It’s a mix of punk, classic rock and garage rock.

Velvo Eel climbed from the primordial ooze back in 2001 and rocked Charlottesville for 4 years only to fall back on its laurels and live off the fat of plundered spoils. But the beast has been awakened by the howl of discontent. Unfit for for human consumption, Vevlo Eel rears its head for another go round. This time more heat, more fire, and more that reminds us of when we had gills. Vevlo Eel 2.0.

The next band, The Campaign 1984 are also from NC. These guys play a hard, fast dirty rock. This is their second of 3 EPs.

The Campaign 1984 is best described as a “dirty south” rock ‘n roll band from Asheville, NC. The band is comprised of founding members Matt Anderson on lead vocals/guitar and Justin Biltonen on lead guitar/backing vocals, as well as bassist Jordan Luff and drummer Springs Wade. The band was formed in Fall 2004 and immediately began writing and recording music.

The next band is Ice Dragon. They are from Boston and play a psychedelic and doom rock. This is a full 52 minute masterpiece that needs to be heard that ends with an epic eleven and a half minute doom track called “Aquageddeon.”
