Gnod and Spiders Added To Roadburn 2012

via Roadburn

Today, we’re excited to announce that Gnod and Spiders have joined the lineup for Roadburn Festival 2012.

It’s really hard to pin down Salford UK’s psych/metal renegades Gnod, as their their distinctive take on psychedelia is not just otherworldly, but also grounded in terrestrial styles like Afro-beat, krautrock, drone, jazz, space rock and even dance music. Gnod excels at the illusion of repetition whereby its motorik rhythms underpin a myriad of shifting hypnotic textures. As of now, Gnod have released approx. twelve full-length albums, each seemingly materializing from the aether, as the band is surrounded in mysticism. Their lengthy live-jams are created by an ever changing cast, of which there is hardly any information available.

However, Gnod will leave their collective residency at Salford’s Islington Mill — a creative arts space where they live and rehearse — to fog our brains and eyeballs (more…)

Leaf Hound To Commemorate The 40th anniversary of Growers of Mushroom at Roadburn 2012

via Roadburn

British proto-stoner rockers Leaf Hound will be making a triumphant and highly anticipated return to Roadburn for the 2012 festival. Led by original vocalist Pete French, Leaf Hound gets a chance to reprise their extraordinary 2006 Roadburn performance, this time playing their seminal Growers of Mushroom LP in its entirety on Saturday, 14 April.

One of the legendary heavy 70′s acts from England, and cited as a major influence by many current bands, Leaf Hound are still a powerful live band with their devastating show at Roadburn 2006 providing ample proof of their skills. They went on to release their Unleashed album in 2007 and have been celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2011.

Avant-garde rock maestros Virus added to Roadburn 2012 line-up; Hexvessel and Dark Buddha Rising confirmed, too!

20110922-071725.jpg

via Roadburn
Avant-garde rock maestros Virus, led by former Ved Buens Ende mastermind Carl-Michael Eide (a.k.a Czral), are one of the finest, most exquisite musical exports Norway has to offer at this very moment. Its very hard to describe the musical universe of Virus… think a vast spectrum of genres, ranging from psychedelic to krautrock and from rock via jazz to avant-metal, but all weird and trippy in an inexplicably elegant way… and then at the same time it’s really catchy, too! Devil Confirmed For Roadburn 2012

via Roadburn

We’re very pleased to report that occult rockers Devil have been confirmed for the Saturday Roadburn date, Saturday, 14 April, 2012 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Founded in 2009, Norway’s Devil are a return to the heyday of proto-metal. With a stripped down, vintage, melodic sound that recalls the likes of Black Sabbath, Pentagram and a more typical NWOBHM vibe of Witchfinder General, Devil‘s debut full-length,Time to Repent offers up tales of sorcery, evil women, open graves and all manner of good clean family fun with an utter and complete lack of pretense. On stage, Devil don’t attempt any overblown grandeur either, as the band relies instead on their swaggering doom, chuggy guitar riffs and their honest to god, pure garage-metal approach. All hail Devil!

Legendary Doom Pioneers The OBSESSED To Reunite For Roadburn 2012

Legendary Doom Pioneers THE OBSESSED To Reunite For Roadburn 2012

Roadburn is elated to announce that legendary doom pioneers THE OBSESSED will reunite to play the Roadburn Festival on Saturday, 14 April 2012. The band will be featuring the lineup from “The Church Within”; SCOTT “WINO” WEINRICH on guitar/vocals, GREG ROGERS (Goatsnake, Sonic Medusa) on drums and GUY PINHAS (Acid King, Goatsnake and Beaver) on bass.

There is no debating the impact that WINO has had (and continues to have) on the stoner scene, and THE OBSESSED is the band with which he developed his signature doom songwriting and guitar sound. Formed in Maryland in 1976 as Warhorse, they soon changed their name to THE OBSESSED. The original four man lineup was pared down to a power trio and they spent several years playing shows and honing their sound, culminating in the release of the “Sodden Jackal” 7″ in1983.

New Saviours Video, Confirmed For Roadburn 2012

via Roadburn

Oakland’s Saviours have just released their new album Death’s Procession (Kemado Records) and we jumped at the chance to be among the first to premiere the video for the track Crete’n. It’s an ode to the biker exploitation movies of the Sixties and captures the band’s glorious proto metal vibe.

Ever wondered what would happen if you took your favorite Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden and Motorhead albums, threw ‘em into the bay, dried ‘em over a bonfire and played ‘em backwards? Listen to Saviours and find out! (more…)

Sleep To Headline Roadburn 2012, OM To Play As Well

via Roadburn

Roadburn headquarters are in a euphoric state as we report that West Coast stoner metal legends Sleep have been confirmed as the headliner at Roadburn Festival 2012. Sleep are irrefutably a seminal band of the stoner rock scene and to our elation they are coming to their spiritual home of Roadburn to anchor the 2012 festival.

Featuring original members Al Cisneros and Matt Pike together with drummer Jason Roeder of Neurosis, Sleep will be playing (a one-off show) on Saturday, 14 April 2012Al Cisneros will also be appearing with OM together with Emil Amos and Robert A.A. Lowe, bringing their hypnotic vibrations to Roadburn‘s mainstage on Thursday12 April.

“Sleep are honored to attend the Symposium of Iommic Research, Tilburg at the 17th Annual Roadburn Festival– Al Cisneros.

We at the Roadburn Festival consider Sleep to be among the most important bands influencing today’s thriving stoner / sludge / metal scene. Their vision to combine the powerful riffs of Black Sabbath with the outsider ethics of punk rock turned into an unstoppable amalgamation, one that catapulted them to (more…)

via Roadburn

Today Is The Day To Play Roadburn 2011

via Roadburn

We’re very pleased to report that Today is the Day will be part of the 2011 Roadburn Festival lineup, set for Thursday, April 14th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Some bands like to present the facade that they are evil because it  makes them seem more exciting, more counterculture, more metal. Today is the Day mastermind Steve Austin has no such need. Despite
traversing a wide musical territory (much of it not easily describable as metal) over the course of 19 years and 8 full length albums, Today is the Day stands as one of the most truly evil, misanthropic and
disturbing bands of our time. (more…)

Black Math Horseman To Play Roadburn 2011

via Roadburn

As you all may have noticed, the line-up for Roadburn Festival 2011 has been shaping up nicely.  In addition to the bands previously announced, we are very happy to report that Black Math Horseman will be part of the 2011 festival lineup. Originally scheduled to perform at this years Roadburn Festival in April 2010, Black Math Horseman ended up stuck in LA due to logistic complications arising from the volcanic eruption in Iceland.  Black Math Horseman is now scheduled to play on Saturday, April 16 at the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.

LA’s Black Math Horseman live somewhere between the psychedelic world of 70′s stoner and contemporary shoegazers which they adorn with touches of goth and post rock to create their mind altering sound. (more…)

More Bands Announced for Roadburn and The Afterburner Party

All via Roadburn of course

Roadburn is thrilled to report that doom supergroup Shrinebuilder will be part of the 2011 Roadburn Festival lineup. Originally scheduled to perform at this years Roadburn Festival in April 2010, Shrinebuilder ended up stuck in New York due to logistic complications arising from the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Shrinebuilder is now scheduled to play on Saturday, April 16 at the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.

With Scott Kelly (Neurosis) and Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, The Hidden Hand and Wino) on guitar, Al Cisneros (OM, Sleep) on bass and Dale Crover (Melvins) on drums, Shrinebuilder’s self-titled debut full-length (released on Neurot Recordings) is perhaps the most anticipated “Roadburn Festival album” of the year. Over the past year we have watched the Shrinebuilder buzz rise to fever pitch.

We are truly looking forward to see Kelly, Wino, Cisneros and Crover meld their unique, different styles. When these four musicians get together, catchy canyon-size riffs lead to psychedelic guitar solos; subdued vocals add a mellow touch; and the meandering, groove-laden ambience ultimately creates crushing doom riffage. The sum of the parts is only strengthened by the natural vibe between these musical heavyweights – all of whom embody the true spirit of the Roadburn Festival. (more…)

Cough To Play Roadburn 2011

via Roadburn

Roadburn Festival is very pleased to report that Cough will be playing the Thursday Roadburn date, Thursday, April 14th, 2011.

Richmond’s Cough delivers a dirge-laden take on excessively drugged out doom (think Electric Wizard as the central point of reference). Both their albums, Sigillum Luciferi and Relapse Records debut, Ritual Abuse, (more…)
