Melvins Lite is an additional incarnation of the Melvins. The line-up is Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas & Tomahawk). Melvins Lite’s debut release is “Freak Puke,” available June 5 via Ipecac Recordings. “The Melvins have a long history of mixing up our line-ups and I think that’s what has kept us relevant for so long,” explains Osborne. “Consider the Freak Puke record the fifth side of the four-sided Melvins triangle.”

Toby Cook of The Quietus recently conducted an interview with Matt Pike of the San Francisco Bay Area hard rock band HIGH ON FIRE. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
The Quietus: The title of the [new HIGH ON FIRE] record, “De Vermis Mysteriis”, obviously has links to the grimoires of Robert Bloch and H.P. Lovecraft, but the concept is based around the idea that Jesus had a twin who died at birth, and then became a time traveller, right? Can you clear up what the fuck’s going on there?
Pike: Yeah, well, he died at birth so that Jesus could live and then forwards himself through time and sees the destruction that Christianity causes and tries to travel back in time to warn his brother — who’s innocent of all this. But there’s lots of little factors in between that are Lovecraft-ian, (more…)

The new Torche album ‘Harmonicraft’ leaked on the internet this week and downloads have been fevered and numerous. Since you have probably already heard part of all of this new Volcom release prior to the April 24th official release date…here is a review…
The first Torche release on the Volcom label was destined to be a swing for the fences. Following 2008’s ‘Meanderthal’ and the 2010 release ‘Songs for Singles’, it seemed that this Miami juggernaut could do no wrong. Between endless touring with acts like Valient Thorr and Corrosion of Conformity, and band members participating in other projects like the esteemed Floor and Robotic Empire act Shitstorm, Torche has been busier than a cucumber in a woman’s prison. That said, expectations were high for their Volcom debut.
The opening track of this behemoth wastes no time displaying no flavor. “Letting Go”, the opening track is characteristically upbeat. Uplifting is (more…)
The Next Hundred Years is a band from Vancouver Canada. They play an interesting blend of hard rock citing influences such as Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. Their sound is not desert rock though. Perhaps a heavier Queens though. Very good and highly recommended.

Starting with an earth shattering bass line reminiscent of Electric Wizard in their Dopethrone days, Lomera will instantly grab you by the balls and throw you into a brick wall of sound. The opening track from their self-titled EP is called Hail The Storm which wastes no time in getting to the point. Most bands under the tag of ‘stoner rock’ will base their song writing structure around their ability to provide the listener with lengthy extended jams which recycle the same guitar riffs over and over but not this 5-peice from Sydney, Australia.
No Way But The River might not have as much brutal riffage but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in quality. This is definitely the track which earns this band their ‘stoner’ tag. The groove laden bass lines and powerhouse drumming from the rhythm section of Rick Swain and Brad Kimber respectively, are clearly the driving force behind this song as they lay down a solid foundation for the soothing solos copious amounts of phasing effects from guitarists Reggie Barber and Jason Higson. To top it of Matt Power delivers a raspy vocal performance which teeters the band on the (more…)
Lord Dying come from Portland, Oregon, a place over abundant with purveyors of the heavy riff. A region where the inhabitants are plagued with nerve and joint damage due to lack of sunlight. In a time where everyone is trying to out-sludge or out-doom each other Lord Dying gives something less than a fuck. They are a metal band with members of Black Elk , Portals, Le Force, and Cremains, who in their short, one years time as a band have shared the stage with Unsane, Red Fang, Yob, Valient Thorr, and others locally. They have also braved the west coast twice, the first time alone, only to meet up with crazy prog-shredmeisters Danava and heavy lust-lifers Lecherous Gaze for a few shows, followed a few months later by another co-headling tour with local heavy punishers Nether Regions. Shortly after Lord Dying teamed up with longtime bros Kelly and Erica G and solidified the first monumental release, Lord Dying “s/t”, in 7” form on his Powerblaster Records label. Lord Dying are here to pummel with heavy riffs and promote simpler things like Cold brew-Hot Shower.
This is some pretty heavy shit. It’ll knock you out, it’s better than the best weed.
From Argentina, a referent country of the Spanish speaking rock and home of very important bands like Pappo’s Blues, Vox Dei, Pescado Rabioso, comes Banda de la Muerte, one of the most burning acts of the local scene. The band has been influenced in its origins by the most primitive Black Sabbath and the heavy riffs of Melvins cut by Black Flag’s dissonant and provocative attitude. Banda de la Muerte’s style synthesizes the stoner and doom essence from which it comes from with the typical hardcore punk nervousness and the sludge asphyxia, always with very personal feature which coins the legendary elements of the local rock ancestors.
Banda de la Muerte are thrilled to announce the official release of their second album “Pulso de una Mente Maldita”. Recorded in January 2012 at La Nave de Oseberg studio, Buenos Aires and with stunning cover art drawn by Falu Carolei, the album is a collection of groovy bass and solid riff driven tracks, catchy tunes and raw punk energy. The band has come a long way since the release of their debut self-titled album, constantly evolving in sound and songwriting and gaining far reaching and well deserved recognition in the Argentinean and South American underground heavy music scene.
“Pulso de una Mente Maldita” can currently be streamed and downloaded on the Banda de la Muerte Bandcamp page (http://bandadelamuerte.bandcamp.com/). The record will also be released as a limited edition of 500 12” black vinyl copies and will be available for fans in Europe and North America via Clear Spot (http://www.clearspot.nl/) on April 20th and in South America via Zonda Records in May.
On May 16th Roxy Live Club in Buenos Aires will host the official album release party in their home country Argentina. Banda de la Muerte are currently touring Europe and will be playing gigs in The Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany.

Swedish heavy rockers GRAND MAGUS will release their new album, “The Hunt”, in Europe on May 25 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD’s cover artwork was created by Arik Roper (CATHEDRAL, HIGH ON FIRE, SLEEP), who also handled the art on GRAND MAGUS‘ “Iron Will” LP.
Commented GRAND MAGUS frontman Janne “J.B.” Christoffersson: “Arik Roper is a super-talented artist and we’ve had the pleasure of working with him before when he did the cover art for our album ‘Iron Will’. This time around with the overall feel and lyrical themes of our new album ‘The Hunt’, Arik was the perfect choice once again. We basicallly just gave him the title and he created one of the most haunting and suggestive images ever seen. He totally nailed what the album is all about. To say we are pleased is a gigantic understatement! This piece of art will stand the test of time and become classic.”

“De Vermis Mysteriis”, the new studio album from the Oakland, California hard rock band HIGH ON FIRE, can be streamed in its entirety at NPR.org. Due on April 3 via eOne Music, the CD was recorded in Salem, Massachusetts’ GodCity Studios with producer and CONVERGE guitarist Kurt Ballou. The 10-song effort — touted as “direct, eye-opening and powerfully supernatural” — is the band’s sixth studio recording and the follow-up to 2010’s “Snakes For The Divine” which debuted at No. 62 on The Billboard 200 chart and has been called “wonderful” by The New York Times and “an exhilarating rush” by the Chicago Tribune.
“De Vermis Mysteriis” (or “Mysteries Of The Worm”) takes its title from a fictional grimoire created by “Psycho” author Robert Bloch and incorporated by H. P. Lovecraft into the lore of the “Cthulhu Mythos” (Lovecraft mentioned “De Vermis Mysteriis” as one of the books that “repeat the most hellish secrets learnt by early man”). The album carries a deeply mystical undercurrent, incorporating fantastical themes and lyrics detailing, among other things, time travel, a serum called liao that is made out of a black lotus and “a Jesus twin who can see the past through (more…)
