Satellite Beaver. Great fucking name. Great fucking EP.
Formed in Warsaw in 2008, Satellite Beaver is a hard rocking stoner band that needs to make an LP after hearing this 4 song EP.
All the way from Poland, never knew of em, so I checked out their facebook page. Instant connection because the band used the Oregon State Beaver mascot for a “Worship Satan” jpeg. Love it because I (more…)

“You can hear everyone from Blue Cheer to the Stooges, early Pentagram, and smatterings of hardcore punk. Venus Blue describe themselves as a band with a “unique sound” that “boggles the mind”. They’re not wrong.”
Greece might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of sludgy stoner metal… or the second, fifth, or tenth. But Weathers is out to change your mind about that. They might come from the windswept isles of the Mediterranean, but listening to their debut EP, you’d swear the trio were raised inside the hollow of a petrified sequoia tree by a pack of ancient dire wolves.
The sheer heaviness of Heavy Truck is truly something to behold. It manages to be completely thundering at its low end, while not sacrificing the searing buzz saw guitar lines that so often are thrown out the door for such bottom-heavy production. Nothing comes out muddy–just fuzzy, and deliciously so. Reminiscent of the sound of their European brethren, Sweden’s Truckfighters, the Greek three-piece wear their influences on their sleeves (I mean CD sleeves–that’s not a maple leaf there) and make it easy to forget that they’re exactly that: a Greek three-piece. There’s worse places to start, than to play your debut show opening for Japanese serial-killer obsessed CHURCH OF MISERY. Then again, since MOONLESS also later on did gigs with SAINT VITUS, PENTAGRAM and UFOMAMMUT and are about to unleash their brilliant debut on DOOMENTIA, one could say this was just a beginning…
The band started in Copenhagen, Denmark back in 2008 by people who cut their teeth in the local punkscene throughout the 00’s in bands such as No Hope For The Kids, Hjertestop, Amdi Petersens Armé and Village Idiot. People in the know will acknowledge these were important bands helping to put Denmark back on the international map of underground music.
‘Calling All Demons’ is accompanied by mindblowing coverart by Tue S. and the songs on this debut album are nothing short of a triumph, ready to step up at the top of the mountain of bodies that used to be called the stoner scene. It’s both old school yet fresh sounding slow bonecrushin’ rock’n’roll. Pure primal testosterone sludge done the right way, the MOONLESS way.

Born To Hula have recently released a new album titled Tales of Love. I like this album because of the diversity. I remember with their last release all I could help but think was Queens of the Stone Age. I still think that with this album big time but it appears they’ve reached down and pulled a little Jimi Hendrix and other late 60’s, early 70’s psych rock in. There seems to be a little ode to Songs For The Deaf in the beginning of song 3, “No Regret” with the tuning of the radio to a station before the song starts. Tales of Love isn’t as heavy as their previous release but rocks out pretty hard. The desert rock like tunes keep you moving and grooving to the beat from start to finish. Look for a vinyl release this coming October.
Naam is a Brookln based psych stoner band that is releasing a trip of an EP, The Ballad of the Starchild, on May 8th through Tee Pee Records. It’s a ambitious journey of psychedelic sounds and musical gentleness. It is something to get lost in.
“Sentry of Skies” is chill and stoney. The music trickles with a constant beat and gentle guitar that lifts me off with great care and ease. Relaxing. “Lands Unknown” sends rings of Saturn around my (more…)
When I first came across Orcus Chylde, it was while poking around on Kadavar’s Facebook page. I noticed Orcus Chylde was tagged so my instincts kicked in to check them out. There were a few songs posted for sample on Facebook and naturally I listened. What I heard I liked. It had that nice retro sound that I really dig. Of course liking what I heard, I let the band know to keep The Soda Shop in mind of a review copy when the album was ready. Fast forward until last week when the CD arrived in the mail. Oh was I giddy. I put it on in my truck to listen to while I drove to work. I wasn’t sure what it was I was hearing but it wasn’t what I was expecting. I wasn’t sure if it was all that it was cracked up to be. It wasn’t.It was better.
While I was expecting some heavy retro rock ala Graveyard, what I got was a sort of a hybrid between Graveyard and Witchcraft. The vocals even (more…)
In advance of Friday’s premiere of this year’s highly anticipated movie “Marvel’s The Avengers”, Austin, Texas metal luminaries THE SWORD have announced the release of “Hammer Of Heaven”, an early track dating back to 2003 that was not included on “Age Of Winters”, which the band submitted for inclusion on “Avengers Assemble”, a 14-track compilation of music from and inspired by the film.
Due to severe space limitations, the song did not make the final track listing, but the band, along with their new label partners at Razor & Tie have decided to make “Hammer Of Heaven” available digitally to coincide with the release of the film. Click here to download the song on iTunes. (more…)
The hard, strong sound impact of the Genoese (Italy) band, Gandhi’s Gunn (Hobo, vocals; Scazzi, guitar; Maso, bass; Andrea, drums), is intensely inspired by the forcible sound of the first American Stoner Rock undercurrent, such as Corrosion of Conformity, Fu Manchu and Clutch, while frequently exploring more visionary and psychedelic territories.
Considered a point of reference on the Italian Stoner Rock scene, Gandhi’s Gunn have had two years of intense live activity on stage with bands of worldwide fame such as Church of Misery (Japan), Los Natas (Argentina), Acid King (USA), Atomic Bitchwax (USA), 16 (USA), Nadja (Canada), Amen Ra (Belgium) and Clutch (USA) & more.
The Longer The Beard The Harder The Sound was released less than week ago.
Noisey, Vice magazine’s music channel, has uploaded video footage of “a nameless ghoul” from the mysterious Swedish buzz metal act GHOST talking about Satan’s faith in his band and his band’s faith in the BEACH BOYS. Check out the clip below.
GHOST cult leader “Papa Emeritus” (rumored to be REPUGNANT/SUBVISION‘s Tobias Forge, who takes the stage in the form of “a satanic pope”) and his anonymous ghouls are currently supporting MASTODON and OPETH on a North American tour. (more…)
Google Translate foolishly translates their little bio to:
This group Vitoria only be described as unstable. Have been renamed so many times that finances have been lost track and can finally collect the black concert. This has turned around their careers and now they decidios to do something with their fucking lives. This is what has gone.
Ok, the translation is a bit fucked but who cares, we’re talking music here. You see and feel with your ears. The band is Countach and this is their EP Countach!. The stream is only 4 songs. There’s 7 total but you have to dish out 1 euro. Just one!
The awaited debut album of Swedish DÖDAREN available through digital distribution services from April 27th.
DÖDAREN was formed late 2010 by four devoted musicians in Gothenburg, Sweden. Their first EP, Flyttar In, quickly reaped attention in the realms of the underground blogosphere and was early accepted as stoner rock. It was compared to larger and more influential bands in the margins of alternative rock and swiftly received some dedicated fans in several corners of the world. Eric, Martin, Fredrik and Jon have prior to the formation of the group played in several different constellations in genres ranging from the softest blues to the hardest hardcore.
Spurred by the success of the EP, DÖDAREN gathered during the winter of 2011/2012 and recorded their debut Maen, further raising the level of ambition. The guys in DÖDAREN see themselves as moving through uncharted territories of style, and thus lets others do the categorizations. Some say they sound like the groovy rock that Clutch stands for, with just a hint of post metal added for good measure. Others proclaim that the recipe to sound like DÖDAREN would be to borrow some of the well known Gothenburg energy from Graveyard, steal some riffs from any great (more…)
Bonejackal plays rock and roll, no vocals, just raw to the nerve UFO rock and roll. Heavily influenced by classic rock the trio also blends elements of early psychedelic acts such as Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath and the proto-punk sounds of the Stooges, and the MC5.
Mammoth stoner rockers from down under, Mammoth Mammoth, have announced details on their 2nd album and 3rd release. You can check out the full artwork on their site (link below, NSFW).
After an epic 13 day DMT bender in an abandoned women’s mental institution, MAMMOTH MAMMOTH emerge with a new album not only ripped straight from the bucket bong, but straight from Satan’s anus too.
To celebrate we’re releasing a limited edition, 180g vinyl, gatefold album with extra track, numbered, signed AND each individually cursed by a one breasted Haitian voodoo priestess just for you! (more…)
One could say that the sound is reminiscent of QOTSA and mister Bjork, but this rediscovery of the scene is certainly no simple copy. Rather, it approaches it in new ways, celebrating groove rock, blues vibes and rhythm n’ drive in the process. This comes across in a
really visceral way.
Born to Hula present their 2nd official release, “Tales of Love”. Not as hard as “Sunrise Radio”, yet the same struggle of mind and feeling remains on this kamasutra-fuzz record. Another step in the entwining of instrumentation and messaging. Serious? Maybe. Never sure, but always aware! Eight songs for your aural pleasure. Some instrumental and relaxed. Others angry and bittersweet. All, simple and to the point. To be yourself is what they need. Viscerally, the notes try to reach you, to echo your emotion. Not trying to say something new, but confirm what is already there. Not trying to make something new, but make you feel, again. Things happen that are worth turning into music, and some of them are here. That is all! A kind of fun you need to have around. A tantra you’ll never forget!
Musician Photo Journal recently conducted an interview with drummer Jean-Paul Gaster of Maryland rockers CLUTCH. You can now watch the chat below.
CLUTCH is currently in the midst of a North American tour which features headlining shows, co-headlining dates with HELLYEAH and a radio festival appearance.
CLUTCH will embark on a headlining tour this summer with support from PRONG and LIONIZE. The tour is scheduled to kick off July 11 in Fayetteville, Arkansas and currently scheduled to wrap up on July 22 in Richmond, Virginia. (more…)
Welcome to a new feature that will run from time to time. I call it “Vinyl Review” It’s basically a review for a submitted album but instead of Cd or Mp3 listening, this is all done with the vinyl that was received. The first review belongs to a band called Caustic Casanova. The album is their latest release and what appears to be first on vinyl (I could be wrong).
Caustic Casanova is the best closer in the game today. Referred to as “Riff Emperors” by The Pinhook (Durham, North Carolina), Caustic Casanova is a heavy rock power trio from Washington, DC. They are the best! (more…)
Colornoise is a noise rock duo formed by Sonya Carmona (Lead vocals, guitar) and Alison Alvarado (Drums, vocals). The style of the band is strongly marked by genres such as stoner rock, grunge, garage and post punk.
The project started in 2009 when the girls created a couple of songs in jamming sessions that they enjoyed playing for friends. Being only two, they decide to make their first album.
