The Sludge Swamp Closes

Well after four years, The Sludge Swamp is closed. Friday was the last day for anything new on the Swamp. It also happened to be the Swamp’s 4th anniversary.

The Sludge Swamp was a free download blog that was known all throughout the world by many and started up by one cool cat, “Cheeto.” Cheeto and his team of posters would post up albums by many bands over the years. I myself have discovered far to many to name from visiting the Swamp. Many of the bands posted would have never had the opportunity to be heard by so many people if it wasn’t for the Swamp.

It was almost 3 years ago that I got into the whole stoner rock genre. I first ran across the Swamp while I was browsing a torrent site. Someone had posted an Orange Goblin album. I already owned the album so I thought I’d comment on how good it was for others who may not have heard it yet. In those comments I wrote something along the lines of “cool album, well worth it. Where can I find more music like this? Well someone had later sent me a private message with the link that simply said “the holy grail.” Intrigued I was by it, I clicked on the link. It took me a while to figure out what everything was but once I did, it was game time. Many hours were lost in the discovery of many artists, to many to name. Regardless of your thoughts on download blogs, there’s no denying that it has helped bands gain tons of exposure more for the better than the worst.

The Sludge Swamp isn’t closing down completely, there will be another site opening up soon but the blog as it’s known, is done. Cheeto has been pretty tight lipped about what is in store for the future but he’s not disappearing completely and we’ll be sure to be seeing him real soon. The following was posted on the Swamp’s Facebook page yesterday:

Our beloved Sludge Swamp Blog will be closing down tomorrow on it’s 4th. Birthday. I will be posting the last posts. Some special posts I have saved to close us out with. Stay tuned to the Facebook page for our dot.com address to be announced. The Facebook page will not close down.

Will it be another download blog? Will it be a news site? Only the cat knows and Cheeto isn’t talking just yet. Whatever it turns into, it’s going to be soon and you can bet that it’ll be good.

I started Heavy Planet as a heavy metal blog in 2007 but was inspired by sites such as StonerRock.com and the Sludge Swamp. I too found some very cool bands and thought it would be great for Heavy Planet to one day be able to promote unsigned and independent bands which otherwise would go unheard of. A lot of other sites I’m sure have been inspired as well, including The Soda Shop. Bill has also found some great bands that have posted to Heavy Planet. It is people like us, and our writer’s love of music that will keep the genre alive and strong. Look forward to seeing the new site! Doom on!
