Black Mountain Soundtracks New Surf Film Year Zero

Black Mountain Soundtracks New Surf Film Year Zero
Download New Song “Mary Lou”
Black Mountain’s Year Zero soundtrack is nothing less than the band’s full, powerful glory distilled down to one dense, 45-minute acid tab of music. Featuring five new songs and five previously released songs, the Year Zero soundtrack weaves crunching, analog psych metal; futuristic droneouts; and, somehow, a twisted saxaphone ditty.

More Bands Announced for Roadburn and The Afterburner Party

All via Roadburn of course

Roadburn is thrilled to report that doom supergroup Shrinebuilder will be part of the 2011 Roadburn Festival lineup. Originally scheduled to perform at this years Roadburn Festival in April 2010, Shrinebuilder ended up stuck in New York due to logistic complications arising from the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Shrinebuilder is now scheduled to play on Saturday, April 16 at the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.

With Scott Kelly (Neurosis) and Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, The Hidden Hand and Wino) on guitar, Al Cisneros (OM, Sleep) on bass and Dale Crover (Melvins) on drums, Shrinebuilder’s self-titled debut full-length (released on Neurot Recordings) is perhaps the most anticipated “Roadburn Festival album” of the year. Over the past year we have watched the Shrinebuilder buzz rise to fever pitch.

We are truly looking forward to see Kelly, Wino, Cisneros and Crover meld their unique, different styles. When these four musicians get together, catchy canyon-size riffs lead to psychedelic guitar solos; subdued vocals add a mellow touch; and the meandering, groove-laden ambience ultimately creates crushing doom riffage. The sum of the parts is only strengthened by the natural vibe between these musical heavyweights – all of whom embody the true spirit of the Roadburn Festival. (more…)

Black Mountain Premiere New Single, ‘The Hair Song’ – Free Download

via spinner.com

The rocketing riffs and whirling keys heard on Black Mountain‘s breezy new single, ‘The Hair Song,’ took a while to flesh out, according to vocalist Amber Webber. “We tried the song a few different ways and nothing seemed to work,” she tells Spinner. “We ditched it for a bit and then came back to it, and that’s when it became not-so-minimal.”

The second single and opening track from the Vancouver quartet’s forthcoming album, ‘Wilderness Heart,’ (available Sept. 14) may have started out as a subdued folk affair, but fans now have plenty of driving chords and countrified flourishes to feast upon. “I think the rhythm section really carries the song,” says Webber, who notes that once they band had gathered in the studio, the feel-good tune came together pretty quickly. “It was really fun and fast to record.”

A video for ‘The Hair Song’ is also on the way, though the outfit is keeping the concept under wraps for the time being. Webber does, however, gave Spinner a few hints about the follow-up to their debut, the mystical ‘Old Fangs,’ the which you can watch below.

“We filmed the [new] video in Ontario in this little country town that I’ve never been to before and have actually never even heard of,” she says. “It was beautiful and on the lake, but also really touristy in kind of a cool way. [Our director] found these old sort of castle-y ruins and had us playing out in the tall grass between them.”

“We actually had actors this time too,” she adds. “I’m hoping that we’re just in the very last bit of the video. I think it’s more the actors’ time to shine.”

While listeners are getting acquainted with ‘The Hair Song’ and fantasizing about the cinematic treats that await in the forthcoming music video, they can also enter Jagjaguwar’s pre-order contest for ‘Wilderness Heart’ if they happen to live in the United States. One lucky U.S. fan will win two tickets to see Black Mountain’s performance at the Knitting Factory in New York City August 30th, as well as two Band Bench passes to see the band perform the following day on ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,’ and $300 towards travel and accommodations.

Complete contest details and Black Mountain tour dates can be found at Jagjaguwar.com.

Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean Talks New Album Wilderness Heart

Via Pitchfork.

Pitchfork has an interview up with Stephen McBean talks about the new and upcoming album “Wilderness Heart.” Here’s a few clips from it.

Pitchfork: How long have you been in L.A.?

Stephen McBean: I’ve been going back and forth from Vancouver since September. We did some of the recording and mixing down here. But then I fell in love, too.

Pitchfork: How did you decide to make the record in L.A.?

Well, there were some new songs floating around. At first we thought we could rent a bunch of gear and record it ourselves like we did on the first one and a bunch of the second one. At first, we cringed at the idea of what people refer to as “using a producer.” But then, we didn’t want to repeat ourselves.

Pitchfork: Did they work with each other at all? Or did they split up the songs between them?

SM: We worked with Dave first. We had maybe 15 songs, and we just told him to pick his favorites. He picked the ones that we thought he would pick, and the same with Randall.

You can read the entire interview over at Pitchfork.

Black Mountain Ready New Album

Via Pitchfork:

Spaced-out Vancouver riff-rockers Black Mountain have spent much of the time since releasing their last album, 2008’s In the Future, concentrating on side projects like Pink Mountaintops and Lightning Dust. But this summer, the main band roars back into action. Jagjaguwar will release Wilderness Heart, their new album, on September 14 in the U.S. and a day earlier in the UK.

Up above you can stream “Old Fangs”, the album’s chugging first single. If you head over to this site and cough up an email address, the download is yours for free.

The band recorded the album in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver. They worked with two producers, D. Sardy (Nine Inch Nails, LCD Soundsystem, Spoon) and Sunn O)))/Boris veteran Randall Dunn. That insanely badass graphic you see above is Black Mountain keyboardist Jeremy Schmidt’s cover art, and we’ve got the tracklist below.
