Top 20 of 2010 – Bill’s Picks

2010 was a great year for music. There was so much good stuff released it was very hard to figure out what belonged where. I’ve been pondering over my list for a few months actually and really had a hard time figuring out who went where. This list is by no means definitive. There were a lot of albums released this year that could probably be on this list, but then again, I didn’t have time to listen to everything. Jake and I share similar taste so we’re going to have some of the same picks. Enough of the chitter chatter, on with the list.

20. Zed – The Invitation – I “liked” these guys on Facebook by mistake. I thought they were a Russian band called Zoe. It’s funny how a mistake can turn into a good thing. I discovered a great album, wrote the first review of it for them and I get to kick Mark’s ass in Words with Friends from time to time. He’s pretty good at it too. This album is one of the best independent releases of 2010 and I can’t wait to hear what 2011 and beyond holds for these guys.

19. Sea of Air – Sea of Air EP – Until I ordered the Night Horse 45’s that were released earlier in the year I had never heard of this band. They’re not real active online, I don’t think they have Myspace page either. Heck, when I wrote about their EP, it took them a few weeks to notice it on their Facebook page. Anyhow, these guys have stuck with me since.

Current Rotation: 11/30/2010

Since this is the first installment of my new feature, perhaps I should introduce it. As we at The Soda Shop are constantly finding new music to be addicted to and rediscovering old favorites. Instead of selfishly keeping my listening pleasures secret, I decided I should share with the world. I’m still unsure of how frequent these features will be. I expect they may be posted bi-weekly or monthly. (more…)

ANCESTORS & NIGHT HORSE SPOTLIGHTED IN “GO ON TOUR”, A VIDEO DOCUMENTARY

LOS ANGELES HARD ROCK BANDS ANCESTORS & NIGHT HORSE SPOTLIGHTED IN “GO ON TOUR”, A VIDEO DOCUMENTARY PRESENTED BY CONVERSE

FAST-RISING AMERICAN BANDS’ BRIMSTONE FILMED DURING EIGHT DATE TOUR OF WESTERN EUROPE

This past spring, two American rock bands embarked on a ten date tour of Western Europe.  Celebrated, Los Angeles groups ANCESTORS and NIGHT HORSE traveled to Germany, Belgium, Italy, Austria and the UK as part of a run of live shows bookended around the 2010 Roadburn Festival, an event billed as “Europe’s leading underground festival for psychedelic, avant-garde, doom or any other variation of leftfield sonic pleasures,” where each performed to rousing response.  Both bands captured the journey digitally and part one of the resulting short film – the Converse-presented Go on Tour — is available for viewing now at Converse.com. Bandcamp Recommendations 10/21/2010

Happy Thursday everyone! Today I bring you my usual present, links to some cool and free music. Well, everything presented is free but there are cases where the bands offer a name your price. If you like it, you should donate what you can, buy a physical copy of the album, attend a show or buy some other merchandise so that they can continue to bring you cool music. With that said, on with the show.

You need this one! This is some great psychedelic rock.

“The foursome of John G., A.D., Reverend Ryk, and nimble sledge-drummer G pull you through torrents to a distortion crescendo of white-water noise. Sonically dark and weighty, Black Science swell with meters and phaser-effected guitars similar to those of the band Trans Am.” — TRENT MOORMAN, The Stranger (www.thestranger.com)

“Black Science sounds like Jane’s Addiction and Sleep teamed up circa 1992 and ran tape on a several day jam session fueled by mescaline and cocaine. It’s brighter than doom but doesn’t cross over into sissy territory. You’ve got low-ass, heavy riffs counterbalanced with clear vocals and flashy drums ran through the “lo-fi” machine and it sounds like a party in the sixth dimension. Dig that.” — MATT ABRAMSON, Seattle Rock Guy (www.seattlerockguy.com)

If you read this site then you’ve most likely at some point visited the Exploding in Sound blog. They have a knack for putting out great comp albums. Here’s their latest entry that has a lot of great groups like Night Horse and Alberta Cross. There’s 21 tracks total.

Here’s some female fronted hard rock that’s also part punk from a band called Vagina Panther.

11 tracks of white hot guitar sludge with producer/engineer Mario “J” McNulty (Ravonettes, Anti-Flag, David Bowie) at New York City’s infamous Looking Glass Studios right before it was shuttered.

Claiming influences such as signs written in poor English, bands that think they’re Jesus and fucked up train rides, Vagina Panther makes magic out of these touchstones. Vagina Panther is Dead June on vocals, Kit Days on Guitar, Johnathan Swass on Bass and Trent Good on Drums.

Next up is Arenna. They are from Spain. They play some kick ass desert stoner rock. This is their 2007 set of demos. Despite being demos, these sound really really good.

Next up is some cool progressive hard rock/metal. The band is Sinch. This is their Project Bluebird EP. This 6 track EP runs a cool 30+ minutes.

The Soda Shop Needs Help

As Jake posted on Facebook a few days ago, we’re looking for help. Him and I focus a lot on the rock side of things and we tend to neglegt the doom and sludge portion. Because of that we’re looking for a contributor or two to help add give those two other genres a little bit more exposure. Here is what we’re looking for:

Some writing experience preferred but not required. Please submit a few samples of your work. Samples may be cut and paste into an email, a URL or any other form.

We’re looking for people passionate about the doom and sludge genres of music. If you don’t absolutley love doom and sludge then still feel free to submit but keep in mind that doom and sludge is out top priority.

Must have both a Facebook and WordPress account. Knowledge of both also required. No HTML experience required but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

Contributors will be required to review doom and sludge albums and post the reviews on The Soda Shop blog and post links on The Soda Shop Facebook page. Whenever possible, post about doom and sludge related news onto the blog and Facebook page. Keep in mind, this is more or less done in your spare time. You put in what time you can and contribute as much as you can. We aren’t looking for someone that’s going to post something once every few months, please don’t bother if you’re that type.

Now this doesn’t pay money. We’re all as broke as the next person. We can pay you by giving you our thanks and from time to time, free music. Look at it as more of a way to unleash some of your creative side. We’re not as big as Rolling Stone so we don’t see they type of traffic and submissions they do. Perhaps with your help though we can get there.

After all that your still interested, well send an email to bill.goodman@thesodashop.us with your name and samples.

Review – Rival Sons – Before The Fire

I’d like to thank The Soda Shop follower Jim P. For turning me onto this next band. Without him I doubt I would have run across Rival Sons. Rival Sons is a four piece band hailing from southern California. They play an awesome brand of late 70’s classic/hard rock. Think early Aerosmith. Vocalist Jay Buchanan even sounds a bit like Steven Tyler. While the comparisons are there, this band is not an Aerosmith tribute band.

The opening track “Tell Me Something” reminds me a bit of “Walk The Line.” More so in the way the song is structured and not so much as the way the song sounds. “Memphis Sun” is a big blues rock sounding song that gets pretty epic as it continues. It’s easily my favorite track on the album. The fourth track, “Angel” is just as great and epic. “Pocket of Stones” will rock your ears out til it bleeds. With track 6, “The Man Who Wasn’t There” the band band brings it down a few notches. The song is a much slower in both tone and tempo. “On My Way” is another bluesy track with that mixes the speed and is an epic song that wouldn’t surprise me if it wounded up on a movie soundtrack. The album ends with “Nanda-Nandana” which is a faster and upbeat tune and incorporates some different styles and sounds.

This album really took me by surprise. I’ve listened to it at least 10 times in the last 3 days. I’m currently listening to it as I write up this review. The album is for just about everyone. Whether you like old school 70’s, classic rock, hard rock and/or southern rock or bands like Aerosmith, Night Horse, Dirty Sweet or even Graveyard , you’ll like this. The album was released last year directly through the band. Check out what they have to offer on their sites.Leave your comments below, let us know what you think.

Review – Night Horse – Perdition Hymns

Recently I reviewed Night Horse’s first album The Dark Won’t Hide You. I loved the album and wondered why I didn’t hear of them earlier. The only downside was the album was a bit short even with the web only bonus track. I was delighted when I found out that the band was less than a month away from releasing their sophomore followup. That album is now here and it’s called Perdition Hymns released through Tee Pee Records.

I’m going to go out on a limb right now and say that this album is going to be up for album of the year. It is a great album. What makes it so great is that unlike a lot of albums where each song is pretty much the same from song to song, this album each song is completely different than the last one. The speed, tempo and tone is so different you’d think that you were listening to a different album each time. The album is well mixed. At no time is one instrument dominate over the next and they don’t even drown out any lyrics or vice versa. Singer Sam Velde reminds me a lot of Chris Robinson in his style.

The album is such a throwback to southern classic rock with a mix of modern and gives it a nice even balanced sound. Think bits of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Crows and some Led Zeppelin. This is one album that will definately stand the test of time. Many years from now this album will be looked at as a classic and must own album. Night Horse have really outdone themselves with this album.

The album rocks your socks off with the starting track “Angel Eyes” up until the 5th track “Black Clouds.” “Black Clouds” slows it down a bit and mixes some Allman Brothers and Skynyrd. It’s got a little country in it as well. It’s a different pace from the beginning and it also shows that the band is not a one dimensional one.

The album closes off with the track “Same Old Blues” which, like “Black Clouds” is a slower song. It’s a cover originally written by song writter Don Nix. It incorporates some piano and organ. Its nod to southern blues rock, real mellow and the perfect track to close out an already impressive album.

This is one album that you don’t want to be without. If you liked their first album you’ll be pleased that it is as good, no, better then their first album. I believe that this album will pop up in many top 10 lists at the end of the year and is already in the running for album of the year on my list. Where will it end up on yours? Let us know in the comments.

Night Horse Interviewed On Noisecreep

California rockers Night Horse are all set to unleash their new album, Perdition Hymns on August 3rd. Recently they talked with Noisecreep abou the album.

“To make it timeless, I believe you have to be true to the nature of a group’s sound and spirit,” vocalist Sam James Velde told Noisecreep. “I think it starts with writing well-crafted songs that speak to the heart of the group’s sound. Then picking the right songs that flow together in a cohesive manner.

“Night Horse is a band heavily, heavily influenced by rock ‘n’ roll. With that said, we love all eras of rock ‘n’ roll and have never taken a ‘retro’ approach.

‘Perdition Hymns’ was recorded in five days, which left little margin for error, retakes or sleep. It also required an arsenal of faith in the man twiddling the knobs. “Matt Bayles had to really take the role of drill sergeant,” Velde said. “There wasn’t a moment for down time. We just came in every morning at the crack of dawn and just started recording.

Tee Pee artist Night Horse have announced that their upcoming album, Perdition Hymns, is now up for pre order through the Tee Pee webshop. It’s available in one cd or 2 LP formats. The album is due to hit on August 3rd, 2010.

Review – Night Horse – The Dark Won’t Hide You

Well where do I begin? Well holly shit for starters. Night Horse is a kick ass rock band from L.A. They play some of the finest southern blues hard and classic rock music you’ll ever hear.

I’m not quite sure how I came across them but I do know that it was a while ago. I put the album on my phone because I thought the album cover looked neat. Well here I am a year later and I finally listened to them and man am I blown away. I would even go a far as to say that they are Tee Pee’s equivalent to Sasquatch. They do share a similar sound and style but Night Horse kicks it up just a tad but more.

The album is their debut from 2008 and it’s called The Dark Won’t Hide You. The songs are a hard rocking from the first note of “Don’t Need Your Lovin'” to the very last track “Heart And Soul” which is a bonus track. Each song has a different mix of the genres listed above. This album is so good and diverse that it’s really hard to pick a favorite. My only complaint with the album is that it’s a bit on the short side with 7 songs and 38 minutes long.

This review may be nearly 2 years late but it’s never to late to review any good album regardless of its age. Not only that but the band has just recently released a 3 track EP for free on their website in anticipation for their follow up album, “PERDITION HYMNS” which is due out August 3rd on CD and double LP.You can get it through their Myspace page.
