Lo-Pan/Backwoods Payback Tour & Small Stone Records @ SXSW 2011

via Small Stone Records:

Newcomers to the Small Stone roster, Ohio fuzz geniuses Lo-Pan and low-down Eastern PA dirt-rockers Backwoods Payback are hitting road next month, flattening towns on their way to and through SXSW in Austin, TX. The two bands, no strangers to touring together, have plotted a course down the East Coast, across to Austin, where they’ll take place in the annual Small Stone SXSW Showcase, the back north through the Midwest on their way home.

Says Lo-Pan [guitarist Brian Fristoe], We’re stoked to be touring again with Backwoods Payback and can’t wait to get to Austin to show SXSW how the rock is done! We’re both proud to be under the Small Stone banner, and the lineup for their showcase is amazing. It’s going to be a blast!”

Lo-Pan’s Small Stone debut, “Salvador” has been garnering the band rave reviews and hits streets on May 24, and Backwoods Payback have are now recording their own first record for the Detroit label and are looking forward to a Fall 2011 release. Top 20 of 2010 – Bill’s Picks

2010 was a great year for music. There was so much good stuff released it was very hard to figure out what belonged where. I’ve been pondering over my list for a few months actually and really had a hard time figuring out who went where. This list is by no means definitive. There were a lot of albums released this year that could probably be on this list, but then again, I didn’t have time to listen to everything. Jake and I share similar taste so we’re going to have some of the same picks. Enough of the chitter chatter, on with the list.

20. Zed – The Invitation – I “liked” these guys on Facebook by mistake. I thought they were a Russian band called Zoe. It’s funny how a mistake can turn into a good thing. I discovered a great album, wrote the first review of it for them and I get to kick Mark’s ass in Words with Friends from time to time. He’s pretty good at it too. This album is one of the best independent releases of 2010 and I can’t wait to hear what 2011 and beyond holds for these guys.

19. Sea of Air – Sea of Air EP – Until I ordered the Night Horse 45’s that were released earlier in the year I had never heard of this band. They’re not real active online, I don’t think they have Myspace page either. Heck, when I wrote about their EP, it took them a few weeks to notice it on their Facebook page. Anyhow, these guys have stuck with me since.

New Small Stone News

This just in from the Small Stone Records front:

First off, The new album from Denver’s Black Sleep Off Kali entitled “Our Slow Decay” is now out should be available at a better record store near you. If you can’t find it, feel free to get it from us.

The long awaited new album from Cleveland’s Red Giant entitled “Dysfunctional Majesty” rolls out to stores on the 28th of this month, but you can get it a little early right here on the Small Stone Online Store.

On the recording front, the new albums from both Suplecs and Roadsaw are almost finsihed (they just need to get mixed and mastered), and will both get released sometime between January and March of 2011. Also, the boys in Ironweed are still plugging away on their follow up to “Indian Ladder”. Lo-Pan are scheduled to hit Mad Oak to record their follow up to “Sasquanaut”, and we will also be reissuing a new version of the “Sasquanaut” album that will be completely remixed by Benny Grotto and remastered by Mr. Goosman. This Winter both Dixie Witch and Sun Gods In Exile are scheduled to hit Mad Oak to record new albums for us as well.

You asked for it, so we are going to give it to you… Sasquatch “III” will be coming out on vinyl very shortly via Small Stone HQ… That’s right folks, we are going to finally take the plunge into the vinyl game. We are currently getting the art together, and having the album remastered for the pressing plant.

Finally, we hope to see many of you in Philly next week… We have two rather kick ass night of rock music all layed out for you at the Philadelphia Film and Music Festival… See the post below for more details.

Red Giant Available For Pre Order

After you’ve read our review of the new Red Giant album Dysfunctional Majesty, you can head on over to Small Stone’s store and order your copy. If you can’t wait, the album is available for instant download through iTunes.

Review – Red Giant – Dysfunctional Majesty

Once again Red Giant have done it. Their third album, and second under Small Stone, this four piece band from Cleveland have put together another must have for 2010. Dysfunctional Majesty is the followup to to 2004’s Devil Child Blues. After a six year wait, the album is finally upon us.

The instruments are fast, heavy and tightly woven together. The vocals are heavy, fast and kick you in the balls loud. Benny Grotto did a superb job at mixing this beauty. Baseline Audio Labs deserve a lot of credit on the mastering.

The album is 12 tracks straight hard rock with hints of metal and maybe a pinch of thrash. The second to last track, “Weird Problems,” is a finely played, fast paced instrumental track. To close off the album is a kick ass cover of AC/DC’s “Let There Be Rock.”

Red Giant fans have been waiting patiently for this one for a long time. You definitely won’t be disappointed. Anyone who hasn’t heard them before owes it to themselves to seek out their previous albums and rev yourself up. If you like bands such as Ironweed, Lo-Pan, Backwoods Payback, Devil to Pay or even Mammoth Mammoth then you’ll like Red Giant.

Dysfunctional Majesty is due out September 28th on Small Stone Recordings.

A bunch of these are no brainers however absent (but once present) from the list are new albums by both Five Horse Johnson and Brain Police. Both bands once had a 2010 as a time frame. Have we seen the last of these two great bands? Brain Police hasn’t updated their Myspace page since April 30th, 2009. It was a post about videos. This interesting tidbit was also in that same blog:

We are still working on our upcoming fifth studio album but to selebrate the summer we will be breaking out of our HQ.

Also no one has logged on to the account since February of this year.

Five Horse Johnson hasn’t updated their blog since December 30th, 2008. They were supposed to be releasing a greatest hits album for Australia and start working on their next release. No one has logged onto the site since April 20th, 2010. Eric’s personal blog, also posted on 12-30-08 had this to say

On the Five Horse Johnson front: We are furiously tinkering away in the rock factory trying to squeeze out tunes for the new and the BEST FHJ album (or at least the newest) to date. Still not sure of a title, but it’ll be announced soon. The songs are coming together in solid fashion. It’s the fist time having Phil involved in the writing of a full albums worth of rock, so expect loads of zany and snazzy guitar shenanigans!

There is some rumblings in Australia about the “little ol band from Toledo” so we have put together a greatest hits package for OZ called “Sweetwater Gasoline”. It includes about 12 of the shiniest gems from the FHJ catalog. It wasn’t easy to pick and choose, be we whittled it down to which ones we think the fans/we like the best. Hopefully we can get down to Australia soon and embarrass our country in full Five Horse style!

Could it be that bands are abandoning Myspace? Last month I did a an article on Myspace vs Bandcamp. I’m noticing less and less blog postings by bands. Myspace can be a good source of news and information from bands but if no one is using it then why bother.Remember too, neither band has made public if the bands are still together or not, they could be taking an extended break. Until we hear from them directly we can only wonder.

Anyway, Small Stone (as well as other labels) has quite a bit lined up to keep our ears and minds happy with or without Five Horse Johnson and Brain Police.
