Top 20 of 2011 – Jake’s Picks

Shortly after I wrote last year’s Top 20 list, I knew it was going to be interesting to write this year’s. I’ll be honest, I didn’t hold out much hope for 2011 after the year that 2010 was. There were several huge releases in ’10 that I figured would put it on top for, at least, a few years. Sure, there were a few heavily anticipated releases I knew were coming in ’11 like Graveyard‘s Hisingen Blues, but that still paled in comparison. It wasn’t until this year started to go along that it was clear that 2011 was just as good, if not better, than 2010. This was helped along by several amazing hidden gems that were discovered throughout the year. I must have had fun discovering and enjoying all of this music because 2011 flew by faster than any year in recent memory.

In comparing last year to this year, I did find something curious. Last year, Bill and I shared similar lists with 10 matching entries with several of those in nearly identical placements on our lists. This year, things are a bit different. I only count 7 matches, and only 2 with a similar position. Consider the additional albums on this list an early Christmas gift from the cosmos.

As always, the creating of these lists are extremely hard, and I hate to leave some very deserving bands off of a list like this. Unfortunately, I can’t include every amazing album on this list. This year’s list has been worked on all year. I’ve meticulously arranged albums as I’ve listened to them throughout this year, continually going back to adjust their standings. Some bands have moved up, some have moved down, and some have flew to the top, seemingly out of nowhere. (more…)

New Band To Burn One To – Deep Sea Green

As also seen on Heavy Planet

Today’s New Band To Burn One To – Deep Sea Green

Formed in 2008 the Hard/Rock blues band DeepSeaGreen consists of brothers Jon and Daniel Jefford, Trent Halliday and Marco Menestrina. All the members with the exception of Italian born Marco originally hail from the East End of London.

After a year of gigging January 2010 saw the band release their debut record. The ten track self-titled live studio album which included singles “Black Maria” (4 months in The Reverbnation London top 100) and “On the Steps of Summer” (over 2 months in the Tourdates unsigned top 20). The album has hailed successful reviews and sold beyond expectations since its release. (more…)

Bandcamp Recommendations 4/7/2011

This first band was recommended in a group that I belong to on Facebook. What a pick it is too (Thanks Alex). The group is called Hot Fiction and this is their album Dark Room. The style is a mix between The Black Keys and The Heavy with some delta blues, a little psychedelia and a little touch of The Black Angels. This is a must have!

Top 20 of 2010 – Bill’s Picks

2010 was a great year for music. There was so much good stuff released it was very hard to figure out what belonged where. I’ve been pondering over my list for a few months actually and really had a hard time figuring out who went where. This list is by no means definitive. There were a lot of albums released this year that could probably be on this list, but then again, I didn’t have time to listen to everything. Jake and I share similar taste so we’re going to have some of the same picks. Enough of the chitter chatter, on with the list.

20. Zed – The Invitation – I “liked” these guys on Facebook by mistake. I thought they were a Russian band called Zoe. It’s funny how a mistake can turn into a good thing. I discovered a great album, wrote the first review of it for them and I get to kick Mark’s ass in Words with Friends from time to time. He’s pretty good at it too. This album is one of the best independent releases of 2010 and I can’t wait to hear what 2011 and beyond holds for these guys.

19. Sea of Air – Sea of Air EP – Until I ordered the Night Horse 45’s that were released earlier in the year I had never heard of this band. They’re not real active online, I don’t think they have Myspace page either. Heck, when I wrote about their EP, it took them a few weeks to notice it on their Facebook page. Anyhow, these guys have stuck with me since.
