Review – Ogressa – Warts and All

I came home today to find an envelope in the box. It was something from Dali’s Llama Records. I thought that Dali’s Llama turned out another album that I somehow missed out on the progress of. Turns out I was partially right. Ogressa is a side project of Zach Huskey (Guitar, some vocals), one part of the great Dali’s Llama. The rest of the band is filled in by Trent Ramseyer (Whores of Tijuana on vocals and percussion), Ian Dye (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Mike Jacobson (bass), Scott Reeder (from Kyuss duh! on bass), and Joe Dillion (guitar).

Ogressa isn’t a desert rock album like Dali’s Llama. It’s sound is a more down tuned version of a Whores of Tijuana album. Less stoner, more doom. The album is somewhat all over the spectrum but yet all within the same realm. It’s heavy rock/doom done right. Right from the start the vocals are (more…)

B@1 Records To Release Live EPs

B@1 Records were on hand recently to record the Hell Ride Festival. Several bands played and the hope was that about 10% of the music would be recorded and released as a live compilation but as it turns out, a lot more of the music came out better than expected and several live albums are in the works.

HELL RIDE COMPILATIONS:
Our original intent was simply to get a compilation together of the Hell Ride Festival and hoped 10% of the music was worth listening to. You guys simply blew our expectations out of the water. We should also give Rich Picard, handling the sound, a big round of applause for the great sound he produced all weekend.
We hope you look at this as an opportunity for exposure and additional promotion of your band. This is the attention you truly deserve for the performance you gave over the weekend at Hell Ride I. Remember, just because you didn’t bring all of your fans, there were over 25,000 viewers online watching your performance streaming live through (more…)

Top 20 of 2010 – Bill’s Picks

2010 was a great year for music. There was so much good stuff released it was very hard to figure out what belonged where. I’ve been pondering over my list for a few months actually and really had a hard time figuring out who went where. This list is by no means definitive. There were a lot of albums released this year that could probably be on this list, but then again, I didn’t have time to listen to everything. Jake and I share similar taste so we’re going to have some of the same picks. Enough of the chitter chatter, on with the list.

20. Zed – The Invitation – I “liked” these guys on Facebook by mistake. I thought they were a Russian band called Zoe. It’s funny how a mistake can turn into a good thing. I discovered a great album, wrote the first review of it for them and I get to kick Mark’s ass in Words with Friends from time to time. He’s pretty good at it too. This album is one of the best independent releases of 2010 and I can’t wait to hear what 2011 and beyond holds for these guys.

19. Sea of Air – Sea of Air EP – Until I ordered the Night Horse 45’s that were released earlier in the year I had never heard of this band. They’re not real active online, I don’t think they have Myspace page either. Heck, when I wrote about their EP, it took them a few weeks to notice it on their Facebook page. Anyhow, these guys have stuck with me since.

Review – Dali’s Llama – Howl Do You Do?

I was pleasantly surprised last year when I found out that Dali’s Llama was working on a new album. Their 2009 release, Raw is Real wasn’t even out for 3 months at that point. The bands newest album, Howl Do You Do? Just came across The Soda Shop’s “C” office. Now that I’ve had a chance to listen to it, I’m going to share my thoughts on the album.

For starters you can almost forget everything you’ve heard from the band for the past number of years they’ve been putting albums out. This new album has a garage rock feel to it, something the band set out to do. Instead of putting out a desert rock album similar to Fatso Jetson or Angelo Jackson, you have an album more similar sounding to Dollhouse or The Bonnevilles. Really what you have here is a solid album start to finish.

The album starts off with the track “Flustrated” which is a little weird sounding at first but it sets the tone for the album. The guitars are a bit heavy and there’s plenty use of the organ. The third track which is also the album name, “Howl Do You Do?” is a fast paced rock number and my second favorite song. “Infected With The Blues Again” is a nice southern blues rock song (thus the name). “Plaid Rainbow” closes off the album with a nice bass line to start and plenty of instrumental playing in a great rocking track that comes in just under 10 minutes. Ok, I lied, there is a hidden track which is a weird little acoustic number bit still cool. I’m not going to spoil it for you, you’ll have to listen for yourself.

Howl Do You Do? Is a great album start to end. Fans of Dali’s Llama previous work will enjoy this. It’s not a far stray from what they’ve done in the past and it’s a nice change of pace. The album keeps their current fans happy while at the same time a good album to draw in new fans. The album is full of catchy riffs and lyrics. It’s a very good possibility that you may get a song or two stuck in your head like I did. I’ve listened to a lot of good albums this year, Howl Do You Do? is one of them. Dali’s Llama has two tracks available to listen to on their Myspace page check them out and see for yourself. Let’s us know in the comments what you think.

Dali’s Llama Posts New Track

Desert rockers Dali’s Llama have posted a new track on their Myspace page. The track is called “She’s My Haloween.” It has a bit of desert stoner sound but actally displays a more garage tune which is something the band intended. The track is from the upcoming album Howl Do You Do? due out August 9th.
