Review – StoneRider – Fountains Left to Wake

It’s fun when you can be a little nostalgic about bands. It was back in 2009 that I had started a new job pretty recently to that, and The Soda Shop was still in the cradle. It was in my mad dash to discover more ‘stoner rock’ bands that I came across StoneRider. Of course, I immediately fell in love with the band. Being the broke kid that I was and the audiophile that I still am, I only had a crappy MP3 copy of their debut album, Three Legs of Trouble, and in my music snob-way, the album was left to sit on my old MP3 player that was made obsolete by my shiny, new smartphone. Of course, great music isn’t going to be ignored by me forever, so I wisely remembered them last year, and I made sure I snagged a copy of their CD. This lead me to ask the curious question, “what are these guys up to now?!” Low and behold, I find that they’re working on a new album.

A few months later, and I have a copy of the album in my hands, primed and ready for my listening pleasure. Please note the usage of the word pleasure because it certainly is that. (more…)

Introducing… PhonoOne

PhonoOne – without compromises …
70’s roots rock is our specialty. Loud and hard, but also melodic and spacey, it must be, if it bears our name. 2006 complaints it has begun a triumvirate with the mischievous knüppelt the fish Köppen’s pop out of the bowels. In 2009, we came to a man gain to Berlin, a large portion of capital to sniff dirt and big block V8 with our Nightliners nitro refuel. Who sees us at our concerts, is now convinced of the authenticity and waft the heart’s blood, mixed with sweat and snot across the room. Uncompromising “Koeppe-wiggle” is called for, because even though the seventies already 40 years are over, that does not mean you can not have fun anymore with the Mucke. So we are constantly on the road and keep our promise to celebrate the classic hard rock and smash bedingunglos so old and young hard-rock Fond the meaning of life around the ears. (more…)

Current Rotation 2/16/2012

I love it when bands submit albums for review, especially when I had never heard of the band before. One such case is Love Mound who has been around for a few years already and put out an album in 2005 (Blackbird).

Love Mound also comes highly recommended to me from drummer extraordinaire Kenny Wagner. So upon both the submission ad Kenny’s recommendation, I listened, and listened, and listened. This is another one of those hard rock albums that hooked me right away that my player’s repeat button got stuck. The sound on the album is hard rock with a bit of country and southern rock mixed in for good measure. The Noose, The Tree, And The Desert Sky is a delightful listen from start to finish. It’s full of harmonious (more…)

Review – Sundown Service – Sundown Service

I’m going to shed my dark, heavy and doom ways for a moment and kick back to something that caught me completely off guard. The band is Sundown Service, a southern rock jam band from Lexington, KY. Personally I’ve always been attracted to nice looking and interesting cover art so when I seen the cover for Sundown Service’s self titled I was interested. From the looks I figured some psychedelic band but low and behold, something a lot better and deeper.

Sundown Service is a southern rock and jam band with a little psychedelic to it. Under the band’s influences listed on their Facebook page they list “Fillmore East.” The Allman Brothers At Fillmore East is easily one of that band’s best albums ever and listening to Sundown Service, it’s easy to see why. Sundown Service doesn’t try to copy The Allman Brothers in any way at all though some of their songs do resemble some of the slower songs put out by The Allman Brothers and even Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s fine southern country rock with a bit of a slower side. The highlight track for me is “Blank (more…)

Introducing… Screaming Rattler

You may or may not remember a few weeks back I featured Screaming Rattler’s self titled EP at a Daily Bandcamp Album. Well I realized I never gave them a proper introduction. The band doesn’t have a bio posted anywhere that I could find so I’ll give it my best.

It all started on a cold snowy night somewhere in the wrong part of town. The year was 1983. Three radioactive and high spiders named Stevie, John and Cliff were spinning webs hoping to catch some nice 8 legged spiders to lay eggs with. After a few hours of catching nothing but flies and mosquitoes, the three decided that they needed a new path in life. They figured music was the answer. The three set out to learn how to (more…)

Introducing… Love Mound

Love Mound is from Tucson, Arizona, playing loud-as-jets rock, with raw, overdriven high-gain guitar.

That’s it. That’s the band’s bio. Their music, much like their bio, just cuts to the chase. Deep down it’s good ol southern hard rock. Nothing to light nor to heavy, just right. They just released a new album titled The Noose, The Tree, And The Desert Sky. Look for a full review in the near future. In the meantime, check them out and listen to both their albums on their website and order through CDBaby. (more…)

Introducing… Planet Ink

Planet Ink is a blues influenced, hard rock group from Muscle Shoals Alabama, founded in 2005 and composed of brothers Michael and Alexander Bowling and their cousin James Sherrill.

Their unique style has developed over the last 6 years through steadily playing festivals, headlining smaller venues and opening for internationally known acts. During that time they have written, recorded and released two full albums and one EP of original material.

Planet Ink have crafted a no frills rock sound that showcases their high energy performance and loud, in your face songs that combine searing rock riffs and catchy melodies. Their music is delivered with the precision more commonly found in seasoned musicians two to three times their age, yet they still command the youthful exuberance necessary to pound out unbridled rock and roll. Planet Ink is becoming a force to reckon with as they fire up stages across the U.S.

My 2 cents: (more…)

Review – Caveman Voicebox – Strippers, Mullets & Beer

Here’s one that came at me in left field. The band is Caveman Voicebox. They were featured yesterday and here’s a short review on their recently released EP, Strippers, Mullets & Beer.

Strippers, Mullets & Beer is a short EP at 15 minutes long but it packs the punch of a full length. It’s got everything going for it. It’s fast and heavy fueled only by the sweat, beer and whatever alcohol you want to consume. It’s straight up hard rock with a little bit of southern rock and stoner rock for some flair. The band cites Motorhead and ZZ Top as influences but leans towards the later. The sound is very similar to other California acts like Albatross Overdrive, Ride The Sun and even Whores of Tijuana if they had a little less psychedelics behind them. The guitars are high and mighty (more…)

Introducing… Blackfoot Gypsies

The Blackfoot Gypsies is the bombastic melding of Matthew Paige, singer and guitar player, and Zack Murphy, tenured drummer from Nashville, TN. With the attitude and swagger of vintage country and rock lore from the past, the Blackfoot Gypsies is paving their path as one of America’s next contributors to the legacy of rock and roll! The authentic trans-western vibe has been masterfully crafted in the traditional roots of American music. We can hear the influences of Bob Dylan’s ragged vocals, Robert Johnson’s slide and blues soul, and Willie Nelson’s stories. Tough yet occasionally tender, the Keith Richards-inspired riffs and thunderous rhythms of Led Zeppelin are contrasted by Gram Parson’s angelic sense of country music. (more…)

Review – Split Hoof – Split Hoof

Split Hoof is an album that I have been looking forward to hearing for a long time. I can’t remember exactly when but I know it was after a few of the bands demos had popped up on the old Sludge Swamp. The demos were rough but sounded great. In early 2010 the band went to Port Orchard, Washington and recorded their debut album in the studios owned by the legendary Tony Reed (Mos Generator, Heavy Pink, Stone Axe). Mr. Reed mixed and mastered the album as well. The end result, one fabulous sounding album.

Split Hoof is a 3 piece from Austin, Texas and features Kenny Wagner on drums. Kenny has drummed in a multitude of great bands in the past including Thousand Knives of Fire, Super Heavy Goat Ass, and Sixty Watt Shamen.

Split Hoof opens with the blues heavy guitar “Donkey” about a donkey of course. It’s pretty cool, the tune is catchy and they lyrics are genius. The (more…)

Review – Infernal Overdrive – Last Rays of the Dying Sun

Do you like southern rock? How about heavy guitar driven rock? Are you a fan of Roadsaw, Dixie Witch and/or Gozu? Well here’s something you DON’T want to miss. New Jersey’s own Infernal Overdrive have been around for a few years now and have released one 4 track self titled EP. The band is going to begin 2012 right by releasing their first full length on Small Stone Records. The album, Last Rays of the Dying Sun, is a combination of the 4 track EP as well as new material making it’s debut just for this album. I proudly own a copy of the EP and my one gripe is that it was to short. Despite “Motor” being over 13 minutes long, I wanted more. Well now I got my wish.

The whole album is full of some great sounding guitar riffs, catchy hooks, awesome vocals and lyrics and awesome drumming.”Cage” (which can be heard below) features a killer beat and some of the best guitar playing I’ve heard in a while. “Electric Street Cred” is one fucking masterpiece of a (more…)

Daily Bandcamp Recommendation – Screaming Rattler – Screaming Rattler EP

Screaming Rattler are a band I discovered while searching for bands for this very article. It’s very fitting too. Screaming Rattler play southern classic stoner rock. It’s heavy and hard. They have a nice and refreshing sound. Imagine a mixture of Clutch, Kingsnake, Lynyrd Skynyrd, that’s what you’re getting.

Review – The Dirty Streets – Movements

About a year ago I discovered a band from Memphis, TN called The Dirty Streets. Their sound is hard 70’s southern rock. They released an album in 2009 called Portrait of A Man, that, at the time, was tough to find. As great an album as it was, it wasn’t the complete package for me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it and played it so many times that the image from the album’s cover was burned in my eyes. Fast forward a year later and the band is about to release their follow up album, Movements.

Vocalist Justin Toland has a voice that reminds me of a mix between Leslie West (Mountain), Burton Cummings (The Guess Who), and to a point, Sam Velde (Night Horse).  The vocals are certainly a strong point. They’re very soulful and full of energy and give Movements that extra element that can make or break an album. In this case it certainly makes it. Vocals aren’t everything though. The instruments are just as strong. Justin’s guitar is just as (more…)
