The Songs of Townes Van Zandt
Steve Von Till, Scott Kelly, and Wino
Written By Ian Gerber for The Soda Shop
From the beginning of my foray into writing for The Soda Shop I have had a compulsion to try and point out the kinship of various artists and singer-songwriters with our modern “doom” and “stoner” scenes. Conveniently, three monolithic figures of the scene have made a record that brings this idea directly to the table with the new tribute to Townes Van Zandt to be released on Neurot Records. (more…)

WINO Says SAINT VITUS Will Enter Studio This Summer
via Blabbermouth
Earlier this week, Justin M. Norton of Hellbound.ca conducted an interview with SAINT VITUS frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich. Wino discussed his upcoming acoustic album “Adrift”; his relationship with SHRINEBUILDER bandmate Scott Kelly and SAINT VITUS‘ recording plans. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Hellbound.ca: Have you always wanted to work on a primarily acoustic album?
Wino: I didn’t really think about it until a little while ago. I’d been over to Germany and I was playing guitar one day and someone asked me if I had ever considered an acoustic record. It was a few years ago but I wasn’t feeling it and I just wasn’t interested. There were a strange set of circumstances that led me to playing acoustic live for the first time. It was pretty bad. I decided if I was going to do it I was going to do it right so I sat down and just wrote a few acoustic songs. After that I felt a little more confident. Then I did “Punctuated Equilibrium” and our bass player died unexpectedly. That’s when I started to warm up for gigs with the acoustic and it felt good.

SCOTT ‘WINO’ WEINRICH: New Solo Track Available For Free Download
We don’t need to rave about the well-known legacy of the man who is Scott Weinrich, better known as Wino. With dozens of albums released throughout his time spent in THE OBSESSED, SAINT VITUS, SHINE, SPIRIT CARAVAN, THE HIDDEN HAND, SHRINEBUILDER, Dave Grohl‘s PROBOT project and much more since the late ’70s, his mammoth and varied resume spans nearly three full decades, essentially set him up as a purveyor and forerunner of the entire genre we now call doom rock. A true legend; this is Wino. But, with the release of the humble but legendary musician’s new solo album, “Adrift”, a side of the man that most haven’t heard is being uncovered for the first time.
Answering the call from his friends and supporters to record an acoustic solo album following the sudden and tragic passing of friend and bandmate Jon Blank, who appeared on Wino‘s first “solo release,” “Punctuated Equilibrium”, in 2009, he set to work on his most personal and powerful recording to date. “Adrift” is a revealing alternative view of this underground legend’s personality and history. Stripped down to the bare minimum — just his voice and his guitar — the songs on “Adrift” follow classic American songwriting ideals offering a compelling mixture of emotion and storytelling. (more…)
SCOTT ‘WINO’ WEINRICH Comments On Passing Of ARMANDO ACOSTA
Scott “Wino” Weinrich — who has played in such acts as
ST. VITUS, THE OBSESSED, THE HIDDEN HAND, PROBOT and SPIRIT CARAVAN — has released the following statement regarding the passing of former SAINT VITUS drummer, Armando Acosta:
“With great sadness we say rest in peace, Armando. The strong, gentle bear is gone to a better place. I knew him as a beautiful, mellow guy who shared a lot of my loves — motorcycles , swords, armor and music.
“Ride on, brother. See you later!
“If you loved as he loved, there is no love greater, forever…” (more…)

Wino To Release Acoustic Album
As seen on both The Sludgeswamp and The Obelisk
Scott “Wino” Weinrich has been putting his soul on the line for nearly three decades with his unique brand of Sabbath-inspired Doom / Stoner rock. He formed the hugely influential The Obsessed whilst still in high school and went on to play in the legendary Saint Vitus. The increasingly popular genre now known as “Stoner” rock (examples : Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Nebula, Orange Goblin, Monster Magnet, Cathedral) and labels such as Man’s Ruin and Rise Above simply would not exist were it not for the groundwork laid down by Wino.
After years in the wilderness, Wino came back with Spirit Caravan in 1996 first playing under the name Shine – a stronger, tighter band than ever before, and a clutch of songs that once again prove there is no other songwriter like him in the metal/rock world. It also confirms why Wino is revered and cited as a major influence by such artists as Henry Rollins, Fugazi, The Melvins, Pantera, White Zombie, Metallica, L7, Corrosion Of Conformity, Cathedral, Life Of Agony, Prong, Foo Fighters…
Shine released a single on Tolotta Records in late 1997. Since then they have been forced to change their name due to a clash with another band. In 1999 Spirit Caravan released their first full-length record on Tolotta Records, Jug Fulla Sun, and in 2001 the follow up, Elusive Truth.
In 2002 Wino disbanded Spirit Caravan after the release of their final single “So Mortal Be/ Undone Mind” due to his new role in society as a father of the beautiful earthling Niklas. But imagine Wino without riffing all the new Stoner and Doom bands to the ground! No world without him! In late 2002 he started over again with the groundbreaking news of joining Victor Griffin’s (Ex-Pentagram) new outfit Place Of Skulls and a new outlet for his personal understandings of musical/political combination THE HIDDEN HAND.
The Hidden Hand released three albums, two of them you can find among the stock being held on offer by this fine label whose website you are just visiting. Being done for a while with the whole band thing and what it all involves he released his first solo album “Punctuated Equilibrium” in early 2009 with the help of long time friend JP Gaster on drums (CLUTCH) and Jon Blank who sadly passed away after the three piece came home from a successful European tour in May 2009.
In the meantime became reality what has been spread as rumour for a while and made all his fans breathless: Shrinebuilder. Something that can easily be described as a supergroup of underground heavy music consisting of members of Neurosis, Om, Melvins and your man Wino himself. As if this wouldn’t have been enough the reunion of the mighty SAINT VITUS took shape at the Roadburn Festival 2009 and has been followed until now with a number of live performances channeling into a full operating band again.
And on top of this all: Following fan’s requests and advice from friends Wino has now recorded his first ever acoustic record called “Adrift” to be released on Exile On Mainstream in September 2010. About time you say? Fair enough. More news will follow soon in the “Releases” section!
Wino will be presenting the material, that fur sure is his most personal and intense to date live in a very intimate atmosphere in fall 2010. (from Exile On Mainstream Records)
